    11. My first screen printed card!  A bit different from the original design (didn’t outline my texts so my cutesy fonts were lost! rookie mistake, i know).  I love how the fine lines came out so well.

I told myself that for 2014 I wanted to expand my horizons a bit and get some professional creative experience under my belt. I looked a bit at NYFA’s classified and Craigslist until I found an advertisement for a screen printing/letter press studio in Gowanus looking for creative people who work hard and with their hands. I seemed more qualified for this than the internships with design departments in corporate companies in midtown. The interview was brief for the internship position with Gowanus Print Lab/Park Slope Press, and I started the next day.  Gowanus Print Lab is a really wonderful space, you should all check it out (or at least check out their website.) A major major perk of helping out at GPL is that I get to use the space as members do and I can take classes there to learn how to screen print including using different techniques and equipment.
and just yesterday was my first class ! yey.

image When we got there, the transparencies of our designs were already printed out. We chose the right screens to fit each design, leaned how to properly apply emulsion on the screen before blasting light thru the screen which eliminated the emulsion where our design was. That way paint only passes thru the screen where the elulsuon isn’t.

I designed something that I thought wouldn’t be too difficult, a “finished” doodle of a Beyonce line (I sneezed on the beat and the beat got sickuh”).  Seeing my work on the transparency and then the screen got me excited to work. My teacher Soner Ön was really wonderful (and something about him reminded me of a roommate I had in college. It’s always nice to have someone remind you of someone else you really like.) and was great at helping me. Later on he have me some suggestions on how I could practice and more suggestions on how I could use this with my illustration work.

image After our screens dried and were inspected to holes in the emulsion, we started the fun stuff: printing.

Usually I’m pretty impatient and would rather go quickly and fix/erase later.  I’m well aware that this is a dumb way to do things, but with screen printing this is counter productive. The quicker you are, the messier you are.  That mess gets everywhere - your hands, your screens, your paper, the clean end of your squeegee, etc.  Another example of when my “make a huge mess, clean later” approach doesn’t work. So being clean is key.
On that same note of taking your time, lining up or registering the two colors/layers/screens took time (not too much) and with my outlined design, that was really important to get.

We did a few runs on paper and then moved to fabric. Everyone got a white tshirt to print on, and I also brought a neon coral crop top because I’d rather wear that than a plain white tshirt.
Our teacher taught us how to register for fabrics by printing on a “flap” of transparency paper and then lining that up with the first layers print on the fabric.

Anway, I left with a bunch of fun Bey prints and two shirts for me and an ever growing list of projects I want to do with screen printing. Making wrapping paper? Screen printing fabrics to reupholster that chair in my living room? Making tshirts and starting my own line? Is this just going to be another thing that I do?
